Handsome Brook Farms Supports Georgia Mountain Food Bank Amid Growing Need

At Handsome Brook Farms, we are proud to play a role in addressing food insecurity in North Georgia through our weekly egg donations to the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. These donations help feed over 400 families, in addition to reaching 60 partner agencies across five counties. In partnership with the Georgia Mountain Food Bank and the Atlanta Community Food Bank, we work together to ensure that eggs are delivered to those who need them most.

To bring fresh, nutritious food to underserved areas, the Georgia Mountain Food Bank recently introduced a new Mobile Market. During its inaugural month in July, the Mobile Market served over 500 individuals in one county, distributing more than 120,000 pounds of food. By August, the initiative had expanded to two additional counties. Through these efforts, the Mobile Market is making a lasting impact in rural areas where access to food pantries and grocery stores is limited. A client from Union County expressed heartfelt gratitude, telling a staff member, “Thank you for not forgetting about us.” In this rural community, many face significant challenges in accessing food. In one instance, a landlord even signed up several renters who couldn’t attend the Mobile Market themselves and delivered food to their freezers.

As food insecurity in Georgia has surged by 30-35%, our egg donations have become an essential part of Georgia Mountain Food Bank’s ability to meet this growing demand. In addition to our egg donations, the food bank partners with local grocers such as Publix and Aldi to salvage unsold goods. However, the growing demand for food assistance means that purchasing additional food remains a pressing challenge for the food bank.

While non-perishable food items are essential for long-term storage, they often lack the fresh nutrients needed for a balanced diet. That’s why our fresh eggs play such a key role in improving the nutrition of families in need. By providing complete, easy-to-prepare proteins, we help ensure that those facing food insecurity are nourished with the essential nutrients they need to thrive.

A significant event supporting these efforts is the annual Empty Bowl Luncheon, held each September during Hunger Action Month. Since 2010, this event has raised funds to provide millions of meals for those in need. Attendees paint bowls to symbolize the empty bowls being filled by community generosity, and each guest takes home a hand-painted bowl as a reminder of the ongoing fight against hunger. The luncheon also features a live auction where bowls created by local and national celebrities are sold to raise additional funds. Last year’s event raised enough to provide 1 million meals to families across the region. The support of table sponsors and event sponsors is vital to the success of this event, ensuring the continuation of the food bank’s life-saving work.

At Handsome Brook Farms, we are committed to continuing our support of these important initiatives, ensuring that no family goes without, and that our eggs continue to nourish and uplift the communities we serve. For a deeper look into the work of the Georgia Mountain Food Bank and the stories behind these efforts, explore their 2022 Impact Video and their 2023 Capital Campaign Video.
