A Handsome Collaboration - Upcycling Nutritious Food in NYC

In collaboration with partners, Handsome Brook Farms took steps towards a more sustainable food future with the "Upcycling Food Waste in NYC" event. Hosted at Farm to People in Brooklyn, the event brought together approximately 100 enthusiastic attendees, all eager to explore innovative solutions for reducing food waste and upcycling surplus ingredients. The evening was filled with enlightening discussions and a shared passion for creating more resilient and nourished communities.

The culinary experience at the event was a highlight, with an impressive lineup of upcycled dishes crafted from ingredients sourced from local partners including Fable Food, Spare Tonic, Rethink Food, Matriark Foods, The Tacombi Foundation, and Groundcycle. The talented chefs at Farm to People showcased their culinary prowess, turning surplus ingredients into delicious creations that perfectly captured the essence of sustainable and creative cooking.

The heart of the event was the panel discussion, which was moderated by Sycamore May, the Director of Sustainability and Communications at Handsome Brook Farms. The panel brought together leaders from various organizations who are at the forefront of upcycling food in NYC. The panelists included Asmeret Berhe-Lumax from One Love Community Fridge, Jeanette Lugo from Agape Food Rescue, Matt Jozwiak from Rethink Food, Anna Hammond from Matriark Foods, and Vivian Lin from Groundcycle. Their insightful discussions shed light on the challenges and opportunities in reducing food waste and promoting sustainable practices in the city. Attendees were inspired by the passion and dedication of the panelists as they shared their experiences, innovative approaches, and the transformative impact of their work on the community.

In addition to fostering awareness and knowledge, the event embraced Handsome Brook Farms’ philanthropic aims. Over $1600 was raised for the featured nonprofits showcased on the panel. Handsome Brook Farms, along with the event attendees, wholeheartedly supported the essential missions of these organizations, who are leading the charge in reducing food waste and nourishing those in need.

Farm to People proved to be the perfect setting for this impactful event. Surrounded by the spirit of upcycling food and community engagement, attendees were immersed in an atmosphere that celebrated collaboration and innovation. The evening was a testament to the collective power of individuals, organizations, and businesses coming together to create a positive change in the local food ecosystem.

Handsome Brook Farms remains committed to empowering communities, promoting responsible agriculture, and making a lasting impact on the environment. The "Upcycling Food Waste in NYC" event was not just a celebration of sustainable cuisine but a call to action for a brighter, greener NYC. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the attendees, partners, and panelists who made this event a resounding success.
